Red card…

baldrefwithredcard Arsene Wenger gets a red card for not playing Nasri and Arshavin in the F.A. Cup Semi-Final against Chelsea. Even though the Gunners started the first 20 minutes well, the manager’s team selection caught up with him eventually.

There was no creativity. There was no danger. There was no width. There was no Arsenal. Fabregas went missing and Walcott just couldn’t make things happen for the team. Diaby and Song are not the answer in midfield. Arshavin and Nasri could have dictated that game given the chance but Wenger chose to be negative when he loves playing positive football. Instead it was Chelsea playing the delicious football.

Arshavin would have relished the stage of Wembley. He has been a sensation since arriving at Arsenal. He has truly lived up to the value of his transfer. If only he could play in the Champions League…Nasri has started to show his ability in midfield and he’s grown in confidence over the last few months. They are both such talents with the ability to change the game and Mr.Wenger had them sitting on the bench.

Chelsea sack Scolari…

dunn_516x596_22280a-750654 Chelsea have sacked Phil Scolari as their manager. After only seven months in the job, the big Brazlian is out and I for one am not surprised. This time, Roman Abramovich has got it right. Managing in the Premier League is very different to being an international manager. The job comes with such intense pressure and the daily grind is tough, tough, tough, even for a coach from Brazil. I laughed when Scolari said in a press conference, “you think this is pressure. No this is not pressure. This is such a small country, there is no pressure. Brazil is pressure.” Really Phil?

I was never enthused when Chelsea announced him as their new manager. They were much better off keeping Avram Grant who was at least building on what Jose Mourinho had done. But the owner chose to go with a big name and supposedly big personality. It failed miserably and towards the end, Scolari lost the owner, the fans and even the dressing room. When players start to complain about training methods and a lack of intensity, you know everything is about to implode. Scolari deserved the sack.

The first signs of trouble were when Liverpool ended their ridiculous run of games unbeaten at Stamford Bridge. Under Mourinho and even Avram Grant, you always had a feeling Chelsea could win a game even if they were a goal down. But that fire and drive was gone. The bravado was no more. He also lost at home to an under-achieving Arsenal team. And to be frank, Manchester United humiliated Chelsea at Old Trafford. He was unable to inspire his team to beat any of the elite four in the Premier League.

How much of Chelsea’s problems this season are related to Steve Clarke going to West Ham? He was a huge influence in the dressing room and on the training pitch. The players trusted him. You can never under estimate the value of an assistant coach built like Clarke. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Chelsea tried to prize Clarke and Zola from West Ham? Anything is possible in today’s game. Zola is unproven as a manager, but he is a Chelsea legend and together with Clarke, they could be the magic ingredient that leads the Blues back to their confident, arrogant ways.

For now, this might be a good thing for Chelsea. Anyone coming in as manager can only have a positive effect. Who’d have thought the morale would be so low under Scolar? The so-called “Mr.Motivator” didn’t turn out to be the Messiah they had all hoped for. And he never looked the part of being Chelsea manager did he? Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez always wear a suit when their team is playing. There is the odd occasion you’ll find them in a tracksuit, but that is rare. Jose Mourinho always looked the part as well. I was always taught that if you have been given the responsibility in an important role in your career, you should always look the part. And for a team that can boast to be located in one of London’s poshest areas, their manager didn’t present himself that way. He didn’t seem dressed for success from the beginning, and just like his tactics, Scolari always looked a mess. Down the King’s Road, that’s enough to give anyone the boot…

Another own goal from Gallas…

william_gallas_280x_441703a-718945 William Gallas delivered a dagger through the hearts of Arsenal fans this week with his announcement of infighting on the field and in the dressing room. Some would say his actions show he cares and that he’s passionate and at least illustrates a desire to succeed and win. However, most would say he’s behaved liked a petulant child as opposed to a leader of men. The problem is, Gallas didn’t have the men to lead in the first place, he had boys. We all know the major issue at Arsenal is leadership. So if we know it, why can’t Arsene Wenger see it?

The man has been a legend at Arsenal over the last 10 years. He got everyone to buy into his philosophy of football and the team reaped the rewards with much success. The reason for that success though was the ability to blend English players with foreign players. Adams, Bould, Bergkamp, Keown, Viera and many other quality guys came together and achieved. When he introduced youth to his team, the veterans were able to steer and guide them in the right direction. The problem however was the English and veteran players had gone and they were never replaced.

In the 90’s Sir Alex Ferguson introduced a young group of Manchester United players to the Premier League and everyone questioned if they could challenge for the title. The media were all over it. But we all know what happened next don’t we? That same team dominated English football for years. They succeeded with a blend of experience, youth, English players and foreign players too. Beckham, Neville, Scholes and Giggs and the support of Keane, Schmeichel, Bruce and Cantona. The balance of the team was perfect and Arsenal can certainly learn from what Sir Alex Ferguson did.

This is a very young Arsenal team and Gallas has been burning on their lack of maturity for a while now. These thoughts and opinions he’s expressed didn’t come out of nowhere. Much of what he’s said this week is probably true. But there are fights at every club. Nobody is perfect and to announce family secrets to the world’s media was probably the worse thing he could have done. He makes some worrying claims for the fans. What do we make of this player Gallas claims nobody likes? Who is the player throwing insults at his own team during the game? And why would Gallas go public now?

Quite simply, he wants a transfer to another team in January. You don’t cause all this drama without having an ulterior motive. Whether he’s right or wrong, what he did was totally inappropriate for a professional sportsman, especially as captain of one of the world’s biggest and best football teams. Arsenal fans say au revoir Gallas. Get lost to you and your own goals and don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

Legend Dennis Bergkamp…

dennis_bergkamp This week, the “Nod” goes to Arsenal and Dutch genius Dennis Bergkamp. Classy, entertaining and inspirational would best describe Sir Dennis. His magical feet wooed the Arsenal faithful for years and the rest of the world got to appreciate his talent when he played in the World Cup and European Championships.

His goal scoring show reel is absolute poetry. His touch was amazing, his finishing clinical and his attitude towards the game an example for every young professional. He was responsible for the odd dirty foul, but it didn’t overshadow his footballing brilliance. Is he the best to have played in the Premier League? Let the debate begin.

There’s only one Dennis Bergkamp, one Dennis Bergkamp, we’re walking along, singing a song, walking in a Bergkamp wonderland…

Phil Brown and his Tigers are grrreat…

After 104 years of lower league existence, the Tigers are out to prove they are worthy of their promotion from the Championship. Their thirst for success is evident and they play with huge confidence and belief.

It also appears as though they have developed a lust for beating London teams. And not just any London teams. They beat Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham convincingly. What are the odds on Hull City beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge? That home record has to go sometime, doesn’t it?

Hull City may not continue on this run of form, but they’ve lit up the league and given us all something to talk about. It’s as though they’ve been invited to the world’s most exclusive football party and they’ve decided to just let their hair go and have a good time. Let’s hope they don’t get too drunk on their current success. Phil Brown seems to be a good manager. Eye of the tiger baby, eye of the tiger…

Premier League team searches for new hero…

arsenal-optimus-wallpaper-02-1024-776582 What is wrong with Arsenal? For the first time in a long time, the fans are asking questions about Wenger and how the club is moving towards the future. The board and management have been given the benefit of the doubt for three trophy less seasons. Now the fans want answers. Have Arsenal become a youth farm system? Why won’t they buy British? Why won’t they spend more money in the transfer market? Who is going to step-up and lead this team? Why do so many players want to leave? Where is Arsenal’s magician? Who will be their next hero?

Similar questions were asked of this team last season and this was mostly due to the loss of Thierry Henry. Many pundits and critics ate their words as we soaked-up and salivated over Arsenal’s brand of sexy football. For a while they dazzled fans, opponents and perhaps even themselves! Then the injury to Eduardo, a terrible defensive mistake, a hissy fit from their captain and the implosion was in full swing.

After their performance on Saturday, it seems Arsenal haven’t changed much in the off season. The fans must be praying every night for Fabregas to return. And oh how they need another world class midfielder to support him. He can’t do it alone and who knows when Rosicky will be back in the squad. Arsenal have to splash the cash in the transfer market to solve these issues. Someone please navigate them to the “Buy Now” button.

The money men must not be afraid to pay for a special player who can change a game on a whim. Somone who has the ability to visualize beyond the next move. An influential force that can intimidate teams from the north, south, east and west. A player that can force himself to be written about on blogs and discussion boards across the globe. Arsenal need their Ronald, their Deco or their Torres.

The Arsenal lyricists are on standby to create a song for their new hero. Where is he? Will he come by land or sea? What will his name be? Hopefully when he arrives he comes with a blood hungry predator who can tear his rivals apart and fire in the goals week after week. Perhaps Xabi Alonso can smuggle David Silva through the back…

They love me, they love me not…

oxeye-daisy-1-741367 On the odd occasion, the greedy part of football can make you dislike the game for about 30 seconds. On the other hand, it can also make you dislike a player for a lifetime. Emmanuel Adebayor hasn’t played it particularly smart during the off-season. He has come across as a greedy guy and somewhat insincere. Perhaps he thinks we’re all stupid. He pledges his future to Arsenal and then in the same breath, whores himself out to the highest bidder because the club won’t match his demand to quadruple his wages. Seems like he’s been spending too much time with Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb.

Adebayor had 3/4 of a good season following Thierry Henry’s departure and now he believes he warrants 120,000 British pounds per week. When is enough, enough? Everyone deserves a reward for their hard work, but Adebayor hasn’t proved he is worth that kind of money yet. He already thinks he’s reached the stature of Henry. You’ve got a long way to go there sunshine…

Arsene Wenger is smart enough to know that the best piece of business he could do all summer is to get rid of Adebayor. He bought him for nothing and he could sell him for at least 25 million pounds. Nobody will pay the reported 32 million pounds. That’s way too much value. Someone will be willing to pay 25 million though. They should throw in a horse and let him ride off into the sunset.

Arsenal would then be wise to take a little of that cash to purchase Roque Santa Cruz. He could be an even bigger star in the league next season and you are buying a player with a far superior attitude. Plus he’s great in the air, scores goals, connects play and overall, is a proven striker. Roque, Roque, Roque…

He may come to every game with big smiles, but Adebayor is slowly moving towards the “lifetime of dislike” category.

Transfer season so far…

CB018788 The Ronaldo saga is not over. The race for Adebayor’s signature continues. Will Drogba be a Chelsea player this season? Is Lampard going to join Mourinho at Inter Milan? Has Wenger found replacements for Flamini and Hleb? Is it true Robbie Keane is leaving Tottenham for Liverpool? Would Tottenham really let Berbatov and Keane go? Is Gareth Barry ever going to leave Villa? Is Robinho really thinking of hanging out at the King’s Road?

All of the abovementioned questions have yet to be answered. I’m going to noodle on how some of these transfers might work out. Nothing major is going to happen until August. It’s always the case. Now I’ve said that, something big will happen tomorrow! Lampard to Milan! Berbatov to United! Keane to Liverpool! Barry to Arsenal! Whoops…did I say that out loud. Let’s hope we get some news soon…the wait slows down the pre-season prep work…

What to do on a Saturday morning…

tivo_logo_lg_rgb There’s nothing quite like preparing for a Premiership football game on Saturday. The only difference now is that I don’t go to the games, I watch them all on TV. Even though I have TIVO, I still get up to watch the 4.30am games live. You feel more involved when you watch it live. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe I ever got out of bed at that hour for Bolton vs Reading! That’s the kind of fixture where TIVO comes in very handy. Which teams would drag you out of bed at 4.30am? Who is deserving of your attention at that ridiculous hour? How much of a soccer tart are you?

For me it would be Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. There are other teams flirting on the threshold of the early bird rise, but I’ll need to see them play in this coming season to think differently. For now though, I would place these teams in a second category for the games that start around 7am. Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City would entice me with one eye open. Portsmouth have snuck in there too, since Harry Redknapp has made them an attractive team to watch. The rest of the league fall into the 9am time slot.

The one thing all these teams have in common is that no matter what time they are playing, I will TIVO every game. I’m just choosy about who gets me as a punter when they are playing live at an early hour. Does this still make me a soccer tart? I hope so…

What’s it all about..?

42-17021668 I am a Brit living in the United States. I grew up in London watching the beautiful game. Arsenal is my team. I had the privilege to watch them play at Highbury for many years. Then I moved to the States. Luckily, Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports have given me my weekly Premiership fix. My fix also requires the images and sounds of La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Eredivisie and the Bundesliga. ESPN came to the rescue too when they started broadcasting the Champions League in High-Definition. Life got better that day. I am also a huge fan of international soccer, especially European and the flare of those exquisite South American teams. Brazil and Argentina have been an art form for decades.

So living in the States has not affected my football. The sport will never be as big as the NFL, NBA and MLB. It might get close to the NHL! Soccer can have a place though. It just needs to realize where it sits in the pecking order of US sports. Let’s not get greedy too fast. David Beckham is only one piece of the jigsaw puzzle that has been building for a few years now.
It is on these pages where we will discuss the world’s most popular sport. It has its beauty and yes, it can be ugly too. The passion and love for the game is often misunderstood. Some of my best life experiences have been associated with football. Don’t give the red card until you’ve truly exhausted all avenues in your pursuit to like this game. And if you are already a believer, we have much to debate and discuss.

This is the freedom of football speech blog. Our soccer sovereignty is governed by you the people. The only twist is that I have a woman’s perspective on the game. A different insight with all the qualities and qualifications of a seasoned soccer lover. So call it what you want. Football. Soccer. Pick your poison. I’m still weighing up my own options.
