You didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition?
Ben and Sophie return to the Lounge to discuss where it all went wrong for Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Champions League this week.
Was Messi selfish to start? Who is helping Ronaldo? Is it time these teams looked beyond their individual icons in favour of collective choreography? Did Mourinho mess up? Why didn’t Tito react? Is a miracle comeback possible for either side? Just where do they go from here?
After they dismissed German hero Jurgen Klinsmann earlier this season, Bayern Munich today announced Dutchman Louis Van Gaal as their manager. This puts the big guy back on the big stage. Great appointment.
Van Gaal is an ambitious man who has achieved much success in his homeland. His Ajax team dominated Dutch football in the 1990’s. They won the Eredivisie 3 times. They also won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. His team was a who’s who in Dutch football. Edgar Davids. Patrick Kluivert. Marc Overmars. Edwin van der Sar. Brothers Frank and Ronald De Boer. They were simply delicious.
What is going on at Spurs? Their situation is dire. Here is a team that was hoping to snatch that fourth place Champions League spot and instead they are fighting for their Premiership lives. You think that’s melodramatic this time of season? Just ask the 1993 Nottingham Forest team everyone said were too good to go down!
