Burnley 1 Manchester United 0. This is not a typo…

burnley-goal_666x45_870581aWelcome to the Premier League Burnley! In your first home game of the season, you beat Manchester United, the reigning champions of England. Soak it up. Congratulations. Your victory was much deserved.

Two veterans led the way for one of the oldest clubs in British football. Robbie Blake scored a stunning goal that any world class striker would be proud of. And goalkeeper and fan favourite Brian Jensen was immense in goal. Known as “The Beast”, he saved a penalty from Michael Carrick (which Rooney or Owen should have taken) and was a giant throughout the game in front of goal. The entire team played good football and they should all be proud.

Owen Coyle could have taken the job at Celtic this summer but he chose to stay at Burnley so he could finish the job after getting them into the Premier League. He’s built a good side. They appear to have a togetherness that will help them through a gruelling Premier League season and their passion, fight and belief shone through against one of the best. But let’s not get carried away. Hull City started off causing mayhem and destruction and we all know how their season ended don’t we? Will Burnley end up like Hull? Can they build on this incredible win and survive the battle at the bottom? They did beat Arsenal and Tottenham in the Carling Cup last season.

Here are some fun facts. Burnley’s population is a little over 73,000, just under the average attendance at Manchester United’s home games. This was the first top flight match at Turf Moor since 1976. It has been 41 years since Burnley have beaten Manchester United. Welcome back to the big time boys!

From what I saw from the mid-week games, Chelsea and Tottenham look hot. Arsenal also look like they are a different proposition this season. Defoe looks like he’s a man on a mission. Not only does he want to do well for Tottenham, but you can sense his determination to get into that World Cup squad for England. Could it be a battle of London this season for the title? Who knows. Liverpool bounced back well at Stoke last night and it was good to see Torres playing well. Without Ferdinand and Vidic at the back, United look vulnerable.

Are we in for a sensational season or what?

  1. Could not actually believe this and what a goal. I mean it would have taken something special to beat Utd and that goal was it. Missing Ronaldo yet Man U fans? Think Alex needs another player to feel the role. I mean at the mo its going exactly right for Man U this is how they always start the season and then finish champions.

I think Burnley will struggle. Beating man u dont mean nothing…its just one game. But I love watching Man U lose and its extra special when its a team like Burnley. Well Done and welcome to the league.

Can you believe the other match….go on spurs. Could spurs actually be a contender for the no.1 spot? I seriously hope so. I mean not to get ahead of myself but that is were we are sitting at the mo.

  2. We’re in total agreement on the fact it’s just one game and that it could be a long hard season for Burnley. But they should definitely soak up the glory of the night. When Robbie Blake shows that video of him scoring to his kids and grand kids…well, you can’t really beat that can you? This is what I love about football. If you are up for it on the day, anything is possible and anyone can get beat.

From what I’ve seen so far, I genuinely believe Tottenham have a shot. I really do. ‘Arry’s got them playing like Arsenal!!! The football on display in the London derby this year should be great. What a match that’s going to be. Defoe looks really sharp and Keane dropping off the way he does worked like a charm last night. If he’s going to be doing that all season, then teams are going to have to fight to beat Spurs. The question for Spurs is can they be consistent. If they can, there’s no reason why they can’t win the league.

Oh and perhaps David Bentley can teach Lennon how to cross the ball before he leaves the Lane!!!

  3. I have to give it to burnley, a beautiful strike capable of winning any match, its always nice to see united lose. they are going to struggle a bit over the next few games with injuries mounting up and not really recovering from players sold, and with giggs and scholes a year older this is probably the best time to play them.

As for spurs when i heard the team news against Liverpool i was shocked with the starting strikers, but after both games i question it no more, they really have an ubnderstanding building and work rate. and with modric palacios and even huddlestone playing well, and not to forget lennon we got some real firepower this year, i would just like to see a steady consistent season.

Lennon shouldnt take any crossing lessons from bentley as his are far worse right now. Just to remind you he did cross for Keane’s goal against hull!

    The Derby should be awesome!!

Lady Yid the game at the Lane against the scouse was amazing, to see us bully Torres throughout the game was brilliant, and carragher and skrtl miscommunicating was a treat. the team played great and was an awesome buzz.

Im going to the Hammers tomorrow and hopefully we can continue our run!!

  4. Lennon does need some tips on crossing and although Bentley might not be playing well right now, we all know deep in our hearts, when he’s on form, he can cross the ball with incredible accuracy. Lennon has improved under ‘Arry though.

Right now, the strike partnership between Defoe and Keane is quite frightening. And you are so right Jonesy…they have a great understanding and it’s so visible on the pitch. They were entertaining to watch against Hull.

I mentioned this in a previous post…for me, Huddlestone reminds me of Hoddle. What do you Spurs fans think? I would have him in my midfield over Jenas any day. Granted he’s not gonna run as much for you but the way he links play is far superior to Jenas. I think Huddlestone has a real chance to nail down that place under “Arry and he’s another player that has really improved. Maybe it’s because the gaffer gave him his Ketchup back!!

Now if you go to the Hammers tomorrow and Spurs win, does that mean you’ll have to go to every game this season as you’ll be their lucky mascot?

  5. Well i was at the game, we won. I must say it could have gone either way, both teams had chances.

Huddlestone looks like he is creating a nice partnership with palacios. he has looked hungry while playing, chasing the ball down, really involved and we dont even need to talk about his passing. i cant see jenas getting ahead of him, this might encourage him to be sold to villa.

im going to the next game so we’ll take it one game at a time, Birmingham at Home, im looking for us to get a win and keep going.

another good result for burnley today, everton might be bottom for a few weeks longer, if they dont sort themselves out.
Lescott is having a medical apparantly at City.
